You're right about TTT being some kind of accident. Tekken 3 had a rock solid game engine but the internet wasn't developed enough to really get vids up or an online community established. TTT came right at the time when the internet started to get huge and vids could come online. A lot of critics bashed TTT for having the same engine as T3, but it was no handicap. As far as I'm concerned, TTT and the internet just exposed to thousands of people how solid the engine really was.
TTT was huge overnight largely because of the World tournament, which I have no idea why Namco never repeated again. Wavedashing, crazy steps, haha steps, and all that stuff was brand new to a lot of people right after the world tournament. Suddenly TTT had depth waaaay beyond what people had anticipated. And the internet community was there to add even more hype to these discoveries...suddenly everybody was going nuts trying to replicate and adapt all these new techniques. It was awesome.
But all this 'new stuff' couldn't be replicated again by developers. TTT was great because the 'elite' stuff was hard to do effectively, looked very cool, and gave you a huge edge in competition. Suddenly Tekken was more than just fast/slow move or low/middle/high guessing games. But this stuff was ALL by accident...Namco had no idea the engine could be manipulated to pull this stuff off. That's why it'll never happen again.
Everytime Namco's tried to make another similar innovation, they've failed. Now they tend to try to correct past flaws rather than innovate, which means that the franchise really has nowhere to go but down. Look at T4: all they did was try to correct the complaints of gamers, but ended up overcompensating and creating the worst game in the series ever. T5 was a step in the right direction, but it was FAR too late....interest in fighting games overall had deteriorated too much by that point.
So yeah...TTT was one of those 'once in a lifetime' things I guess, and I'm glad that I was around to experience it. I know I'll never be into Tekken again the way I was back then.
